Throwback Thursday: Honey, I Shrunk The Audience

HISTA Entrance

Growing up in the 80′s, one of my favorite movies was Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. It was one of the first “grown up” live-action movies I remember seeing. It was funny, romantic, and kind of scary all at the same time. On my first trip to Walt Disney World in June of 1994, I experienced the spin-off attraction, Honey, I Shrunk the Audience, at the Imagination Pavilion Theater in Epcot. It was a brand new attraction at this time, having been open just a month, and all the children of the 80′s knew exactly what was coming.

Kids of the new millennium don’t remember Wayne Szalinski or his absent-mindedness, but for some of us, it was a staple of the Imagination Pavilion. Wayne is winning the Inventor of the Year award, and while attempting to demonstrate how the machine works, it suddenly (and “unexpectedly”) goes out of control, shrinking the audience. After getting picked up by a toddler, almost eaten by a python, being subjected to a camera flash similar in size to a small planet crashing into Earth, and dealing with lab rats racing through the crowd, we are eventually returned to our normal size.

This 3-D show was a marvel in its hay day. At one point, it even drew major crowds to the pavilion! Unfortunately, due to the return of Captain EO, it is now on our Throwback Thursday list, having been a favorite of many “back in the day.”

I wish they never got rid of it. We loved it. We went to the Captain EO and was very disappointed in it. I don’t understand what Captain EO has to do with Disney. The should put something pixar in it or would love for them to bring back HOney I Shrunk the Audience back but know that will never happen. We just skip that show.

I Agree, I was only able to see the show one time on my very first visit to Disney in 2010. It was the same day MJ past. I have seen both shows and HISK is way better than captain EO. I ben back to Disney every year since 2010 sometimes even twice a year but they still haven’t brought it back yet. It may never come back now. :(
