Tron Legacy- A Mom’s Thoughts
My husband(@IlluminatEpcot on Twitter) and I had made a deal with our six year old son that if he had a good week at school that we would take him to see Tron on Friday. So, he came through on his end of the bargain, and we decided to go to the movies. Personally, I wanted to see Tangled since I had been waiting so long already to see it, and I didn’t think Tron was going to be something I could get into. Boy, was I wrong!!!
SPOILER ALERT: Some details of plotline will be revealed. If you have not seen the movie and do not want to know what happens, please do not read!!
The story started nicely, although it was confusing to me at first because I knew nothing about the original Tron (except for what I had seen from playing the Kingdom Hearts video game series with my husband). When Sam (the kid at the beginning) grew up and went to Encom to mess with the software launch, I didn’t quite understand the whole vigilante idea, except for the fact that I figured he was still reeling from losing his father earlier in the movie (That kind of loss would affect anyone). So, when Sam gets the keys to the arcade from his father’s friend Alan, I started to piece things together.
When Sam got sucked into the grid and eventually met Clue, his reaction was visceral. He truly thought he was seeing his dad, so his confusion was believable when he realized that Clue was not his father but in fact a copy of his father that had been created to create the perfect world. Sam does eventually connect with his father again thanks to the energetic and charismatic Cora (played by Olivia Wilde- who was also Dr. Hadley on House M.D.).
So, the main plot of the story is to try to stop Clue from taking over the world of the users by getting to the portal that closes in eight hours. Not to give away the entire movie, but eventually Sam does return home after a lot of action sequences. The main point is that through the entire two hour movie, my six year old son stayed awake and completely engaged in what was happening on the screen. Also, although I was concerned that the action sequences would be too much for him to handle, my son did very well with them. He really got into all the action, and thought that the movie was “very cool” I found myself enjoying the movie immensely although I did notice a few things that I felt could have been done differently (Like the fact that James Frain does not look good as a bald villain).
First of all, although the movie was cool to see in 3-D, I don’t think it was worth the increased ticket prices. Personally, I thought the movie would have been just as good in 35mm. Secondly, although I became uncomfortable sitting in the theatre seats after two hours, I still found the movie to be interesting and enjoyable. What really made me happy about the film was that there was no cursing, or mature situations so it was very family friendly.
Although I usually don’t get into the techy type of shows or movie, I thought Tron Legacy was a wonderful film and I would highly recommend seeing it to anyone who is looking for a good film they can take their kids to and just relax.
Oh, did I mention that my husband would like to have a replica of the Cinderella Castle that is lit up like the grid? I thought it was pretty cool myself.
