Welcome to 2012, The Year of Epcot

Welcome to 2012! Hope you all are having a wonderful start to the new year! This year is even more special for us here at Illuminating Epcot. On October 1 of this year, Epcot will celebrate another special milestone: It’s 30th Anniversary!

In honor of this, I thought it would be cool to start learning about what it took to make our favorite park what it is today. I am also a major math nerd, and love statistics, so this is right up my alley.

Epcot construction started in May of 1979, and lasted a full 3 years. At the time, it was the largest construction project on earth, costing approximately $1.4 Billion dollars. The project far exceeded it’s original budget of just $600 million.

Epcot went through 19 major design redo’s before a final design was decided upon. With 162 acres of parking space, and 300 acres of theme park, Epcot was nearly triple the size of Walt Disney World’s first park, the Magic Kingdom.

Only 38 more weeks until Epcot’s big day!
