EPCOT Center

Yes, the official name of our favorite park the day it opened was EPCOT Center. EPCOT stands for Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. By 1996, the name of the park had been changed to just Epcot, which is what we all know it as today.

4,500 buildings were originally planned to be built, holding 20,000 residents in what Walt Disney called “the Utopian City of the Future.” Disney’s plan was for Epcot to become it’s own functioning city, a futuristic city which would become the basis for future city planning and development.

Epcot was the first park Disney wanted built, but the permits would not be granted until Walt agreed to build the Magic Kingdom first. As most of us know, Walt died before he could see the completion of the Magic Kingdom. Roy decided to continue Walt’s dream and build Epcot, which we all know opened 30 years ago this October…
